WSCGA Foundation raises over $13,000 for Junior Golf

The Women's South Carolina Golf Association Junior Foundation raised over $13,000 at the Jane Covington Classic at the Orangeburg Country Club on April 18th. 29 teams competed in the Captain’s Choice Net format. Through the generosity of South Carolina golf clubs, each team received a foursome of golf as a prize. Participants also received tee gifts, breakfast, lunch, and on course beverages. There was a silent auction and a basket raffle which raised over $7000 on it’s own.

Two junior girls participated in the event by play the 10th hole with each team and giving the teams the option to use the juniors ball.

This fundraiser has been named in the honor of Jane Covington, a lifetime resident of Orangeburg and a member of the Orangeburg Country Club. Jane began playing golf at the age of 13, played on the high school boys team, was a member of the men’s golf team at USC, was a cum laude graduate of USC, was the first WSCGA President, and the inaugural WSCGA State Champion (and again four more times), was inducted into the SC Golf Hall of Fame in 1978 and is widely known as “The First Lady of Golf in SC.”

The 2017 Jane Covington Classic will be held April 17th at Orangeburg Country Club.

High School Invitational | September 23 & 24, 2017 | The Sanctuary at Cat Island

The High School Girls Invitational began in 2012 as a way to serve the young female golfers of our state by providing them with a 36-hole tournament event.  Golf competitions in high school are primarily nine-hole events, and it the Foundation’s saw the need to offer the girls an opportunity to play a two-day tournament in preparation for competing in regional, state and open events.

Through grants and donations, the competitors are provided a championship course and the amenities associated with a first class tournament.

The tournament has grown to a maximum of 72 players. Teams and individuals are extended an invitation based on their previous years scores in the South Carolina High School Championships. For more information, please email the WSCGA JGF, at /foundation-tournaments .

We would like to thank past USGA Grants Committee Chairman, Gene McClure, USGA Grant Department Staff Beth Murrison, the Carolinas Golf Foundation and a special thank you to Kathy Gordon for her continued support in our efforts to grow junior girls golf in South Carolina.
