2001 CHAMPION LAURA CRAWFORD
Laura
Crawford from Lancaster, SC won the 2001 Junior Girls’ State Championship held
at Mid Carolina Country Club in Prosperity, SC.
Heading into the final 18 holes on Friday, Dinah Plyler of Chapin held a
two-shot lead over Kelly White from Moore; Crawford loomed six shots back. Going
into the final nine holes, Plyler found herself still five shots clear of
Crawford. But Crawford would mount
a charge beginning with an eagle three on the par-five 11th.
Plyler and Crawford finished the final round deadlocked as Crawford
finished with a strong 75 to Plyler’s 81; the championship would need to be
decided in a playoff. After
exchanging pars on the first two holes, Plyler stumbled while Crawford carded an
easy par on the third extra hole to claim the overall championship.
The
Women’s South Carolina Golf Association would like to thank all of the
players, and the Mid-Carolina Country Club for hosting the event. The girls were
indeed lucky to be able to play the classic, midlands, hidden gem.
