Fourth Jane Covington Classic was held Friday, May 2, 2008
at the Country Club of Orangeburg. Mayor Paul Miller welcomed
all of the 72 players who participated in the 4 person captain’s
choice format.
Several generations of golfers represented the field. Women’s
South Carolina Golf Association Co-founders Jane Covington
and Georgia Hart where on hand for the opening ceremonies
as Mrs. Hart hit the ceremonial first ball. Junior golfers
Chandler Case, Elizabeth Hill and Sarah Johnson teamed with
WSCGA Junior Chairman Cathy Hill in the special event.
Orangeburg Mayor Paul Miller addressed the crowd, emphasizing
the reason we were all gathered for a day of fun was for
the future of the game by encouraging and assisting all
junior golfers to have the chance to participate. “This
is the reason we are here” he said, as the three young ladies
standing with him smiled.
The scores were all very close, but it was home course
knowledge that helped the winning team of Ethel and Jim
Albergotti of Orangeburg and Nell and Charlie Strickland
of Atlanta take home the winners trophies by shooting a
low net score of 54.
Second place went to the team of Cathy McKie, Judy Phillips,
Sue Thorstad and Gigi Magoulison, one shot back with a net
score of 55.
During the day, players competed for special events prizes
and the winners were:
Ladies longest drive: Sue Thorstad
Ladies Closest to the pin: Barbara Irons
Ladies Closest to the line: Lea Anne Brown
Men’s Longest Drive: Carter Hillen
Men’s Closest to the hole Charlie Strickland
Men’s Closest to the line: Randy Snell
The Women’s South Carolina Vicki Hillen Junior Golf Foundation
would like to thank the members of the Country Club of Orangeburg
for their southern hospitality.
For the fourth year, we have been fortunate to have the
total support of David Lackey and his staff and we thank
them. The WSCGA VHJGF appreciates the hard work of all at
the Country Club of Orangeburg and special accolades go
to the food and beverage staff for always supplying the
best fried chicken in South Carolina.
The success of the Jane Covington Classic depends on the
