| The
newly renovated Orangeburg Country Club again played host
to the sixth Jane Covington Classic, which benefits the
WSCGA Vicki Hillen Junior Golf Foundation.
Sixty-four golfers participated in the event that started
with a warm welcome from Pin High Corporation President
John Worley and host Golf Professional David Lackey. The
four junior girls hit the ceremonial tee shot in unison
and the sixth Jane Covington Classic was officially underway.
The word “wow” was the most exclaimed word of the day as
the golfers got their first look at the newly renovated
golf course, grand ballroom and other improvements around
the complex.
Out on the golf course, the golfers not only competed for
the top prize but also for the numerous contests that were
held around the golf course.
Ben Shadoan and Elizabeth Hill won men and women’s longest
drives, Ron Huber and Hilda Hall won Straightest Drives,
and Phil Hillen and Karen Burke won the closest to the pins.
The team of Cecelia Barksdale, Sara Murphy, Kimberly Case
and Lea Venable successfully defended their title with a
total of 56. Second place went to the team of Barbara Irons,
Marianne Frick, Karen Wolfe and Shirley Deasy.
The biggest winner of the day was the WSCGA Vicki Hillen
Foundation. With the participants, volunteers, and community
members uniting around this common goal, each of them were
giving back to the game that has enriched their lives in
so many different ways.
The foundation strives to enhance the lives of juniors
through exposure to the game of golf by fostering competition,
sportsmanship, and appreciation for the integrity of the
game.
The Foundation hopes that we can continue to work together
to provide playing and recreational opportunities for all
junior golfers as well as preserve the history of the Women’s
South Carolina Golf Association, which was founded in 1948
to promote and serve the best interest of women’s amateur
golf in South Carolina.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the participants
who spent their day with us, the Orangeburg Ladies Golf
Association, Host Professional David Lackey, Club Manager
Dan Cook, and Mr. John Worley.
Most importantly I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Tourville for all they have done through the years to help
make the Jane Covington Classic a success and to “South
Carolina’s First Lady of Golf” Jane Covington for lending
her name to this wonderful event, and for all she has done
for Women’s and Junior Golf in the State of South Carolina.
We hope that you enjoyed the day and we appreciate your
support of The WSCGA Vicki Hillen Junior Golf Foundation.
