A beautiful spring day, a challenging golf course, the
thought and smell of fried chicken, and 15 eager teams playing
for a cause all made for a special day at Orangeburg Country
Club when the seventh Jane Covington Classic was held on
Monday, April 18th.
The day started with a continental breakfast and warm welcome
from Pin High Golf President John Worley and Head Golf Professional
David Lackey. After the welcome, junior golfers Jalen and
Jensen Castle, Sidney Legacy and Karly Mims simultaneously
hit the ceremonial first shot to get the tournament underway.
The teams competed in a captain’s choice format with several
skills challenge holes along the way. Prizes were given
out to both men and women for closest to the pin, longest
drive and closest to the line.
When the scores were recorded, two teams both from Columbia
were tied with a score of 53. The team of Barbara Irons,
Kristy Coggins, Marianne Frick and Shirley Deasy won on
a match of cards over the junior team of Jalen and Jensen
Castle, Sidney Legacy and Karly Mims.
All of the teams went home winners as each team received
a round of golf from one of the many clubs that donated
rounds of golf to be given away as prizes.
During lunch, the players viewed and bid on silent auction
items that included golf getaways to Kiawah Island Resort,
Grande Dunes Marina, Wild Dunes and Spring Island as well
as rounds of golf at many of South Carolina premier courses
including, Yeamans Hall, Palmetto, Harbour Town, Long Cove
just to name a few.
Participants also heard from the past, present and future.
Tournament namesake, Jane Covington, tournament chairman
Genon Krivohlavek and the four junior golfers all spoke
about how golf has played a role in their lives.
The biggest winner of the day was the WSCGA Vicki Hillen
Junior Golf Foundation. The proceeds from this event help
provide learning and playing opportunities for junior golfers,
provides financial assistance to qualified juniors to help
offset the expenses associated with junior golf, sponsors
the WSCGA Junior Championship and the Georgia/South Carolina
Junior Girls Challenge Matches. The foundation also preserves
the history of the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association.
The WSCGA Vicki Hillen Junior Golf Foundation would like
to thank the many sponsors and donors whose generosity helps
make this event possible. The Orangeburg CC Women’s Golf
Association for volunteering their time to make sure everything
runs smoothly and the outstanding staff at Orangeburg who
leaves no stone unturned.
Many thanks to the participants who chose to spend the day
with us and we hope that we can continue to work together
to provide learning and playing opportunities for our juniors
as well as preserving the history of the Women’s SC Golf
Association which was founded in 1948 to promote and serve
the best interest of women’s amateur golf in South Carolina.
