WSCGA STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDLAND VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB SEPTEMBER 10-12, 2002

Karen Ferree of Hilton Head won the 2002 WSCGA Stoke Play Championship with her consistent ball striking and steady putter. The greens of Midland Valley had baffled the players all week long, but Ferree managed to keep her cool and avoid costly misses. She started the final round with a one shot lead over Cecilia A. Barksdale of Columbia.

In the final round, 2002 Match Play champion Vicki Hillen, three shots back going into the day’s play, drew within a shot of Ferree after nine holes, but stumbled coming in due to a balky putter. On the 14^th, Barksdale rolled in a 20-footer for birdie to climb within one shot of Ferree. But this is as close as it would get. Barksdale bogied 15 and 17 as Karen continued to make pars. When Ferree holed out on the 18^th, she had won by four strokes.

Other flight winners include Yoshiko Mizuno, Maureen O’Brian, Mary Secoy, and Judy Allardice.

The winner of the low net Myrtice Riccoboni Trophy was Liz Scheuer of North Augusta.

The Women’s South Carolina Golf Association would like to thank all of the players, and Midland Valley Country Club for hosting the event.
