WSCGA STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
NICKLAUS COURSE-COLLETON RIVER PLANTATION
SEPTEMBER 9-11 2003

Bluffton, SC

Lea Ann Brown from Mt. Pleasant, won the 2003 WSCGA Stoke Play Championship played on the Nicklaus course at Colleton River Plantation. Lea Ann started the final round with a six shot lead over 2001 Champion Lea Bagwell-Venable. Brown got off to a steady start with pars on seven of the first eight holes. But with a double bogey on 9 and consecutive bogeys on 12, 13 and 14, the door opened for Venable and she responded with birdies on holes 13, 15 and 17. Going to the 18th tee Brown’s lead had shrunk to 2 shots. Venable’s drive on 18 found the fairway bunker removing any chance of a birdie and taking the pressure off Brown. Lea Ann made a clutch recovery from a difficult greenside bunker; hitting it a foot from the hole to save par and capture the Championship. Susan Cummings, the first round leader from Simpsonville finished 3rd and Diane Wright from Florence was 4th.

Other flight winners include Deanna Wilson, Becky Lusk, Audrey Burke, Jane Assey, and Barbara Collings. The winner of the low net Myrtice Riccoboni Trophy was Jeannie Craig of Walhalla.

The Women’s South Carolina Golf Association would like to thank all of the players, and Colleton River for hosting the event.
