2006 WSCGA STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

    Furman University Golf Club

SEPTEMBER 12-16, 2006

Greenville, SC

Lea Venable from Simpsonville captured her second WSCGA Stroke Play Championship by winning the rain shortened 2006 championship played at the 5990 yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville.

Going into the final round on Thursday, Venable was tied with Cecilia Fournil of Columbia after both fired an even par round 72 in Tuesday’s opening round. Defending champion Lea Anne Brown was in close range going into the final day two shots back of the leaders.  After a tightly contested first nine holes, Venable took command on the closing nine and won the tournament by four shots with a final round of 75 and a two day total 147. Fournil and Brown finished tied for second at 151.  Lorraine Ballerano from Myrtle Beach shot two rounds of 76 to finish fourth at 152.

Chris Shadoan from Taylors and Jessie Finucan of Summerville, both former WSCGA champions, also started the final day tied for the lead in the State division, each with first round scores of 82. Starting the final day on the back nine # 10, Shadoan came out slow with bogies on holes 10 and 11, but regained her composure and birdied holes 14 and 15 to finish her first nine with a 38. Going into the final nine holes with a comfortable lead over Finucan, Chris continued her fine play and fired off four consecutive birdies to shoot a final round 74 to win the division by 12 shots. Finucan finished second and tournament co-chairman Kay Hall from Greenville finished third. Toni Buerkert from Columbia was the fourth place winner.

The overall net winner of the Riccoboni Trophy was Jeanne Craig from Walhalla with a two day net total of 139.

The Women’s South Carolina Golf Association would like to thank Furman University Golf Club, tournament co-chairmen Kay Hall and Marlene Edwards and all of the many volunteers for hosting this Championship.
